Battling With Single Strand Knots? Try Oil Rinsing?

Article by:  Kandycurls

Oil rinsing is a technique used to lock moisture in ones hair while in the process of washing and conditioning. It is very similar to the LOC method, except it is only done in the shower. It is usually done with one of three oils—olive, coconut or avocado—because they penetrate the hair shaft. Here is a Guide to Oil Rinsing for Hair.

Benefits

  • You increase moisture retention because you are rinsing your hair with ample oil that penetrates the hair shaft to lock in water, leaving your hair more moisturized.
  • Oil rinsing is a great way to add more shine to your hair. Some do it, just to get rid of lackluster hair and increase shine.
  • You will have less single strand knots because oil rinsing combats dry ends, which prohibits single strand knots from forming.
There are many different ways that you can oil rinse your hair, but don't be intimidated by this technique. The method that works for me is an easy introduction into the world of oil rinsing. And it's easier than you might think.

Do you have dry hair?

Being that natural hair can be extremely dry, I like to do an oil rinse more often than not. For me, the best technique for doing this is after shampooing and during my conditioning process, instead of before my conditioning process like many do. In other words, I like to mix my oil of choice (i.e. olive oil) in with my conditioner. I have tried the latter technique, shampoo, oil, and then conditioner. I have also tried shampoo, conditioner, and then rinse, but my hair often feels too heavy. By mixing my conditioner and the oil, I get extra moisture without the heaviness.

Conditioner oil mix

After shampooing, I condition as I regularly would, rinse, and then condition with the oil and conditioner mixture. To do an oil rinse, I take a bowl in the shower, add a half-cup of oil and three tablespoons of conditioner, and mix. I like to let this sit in my hair for a little while if I can, so that it penetrates the hair shaft.
In other words, I like to mix my oil of choice (i.e. olive oil) in with my conditioner.

Why it works

My hair is low porosity, meaning the hair shaft is tightly bound, which makes it difficult for moisture to penetrate. That being said, a regular oil rinse adds moisture, but not as much as I would like on its own. It does not feel as moisturized as it would if I added the oil to some conditioner. Also, with a regular oil rinse the remnants sit on top of my hair, which leaves it feeling coated. Mixing oil and conditioner for my oil rinse allows me to get deeply moisturized result.
Oil rinsing not only adds moisture, it also adds shine and makes detangling much easier for you. I have seen some rave about it and others who were not so impressed, but remember there is always a way to modify almost any hair maintenance technique to make it work for you.
Have you tried oil rinsing? Do you have something similar to oil rinsing that you like to do?

Frizz Attack!

Combating Frizz

Causes of Frizz

  • Dry Hair
  • Product Build-Up
  • Damaged Hair

Dry Hair.  The primary cause or root of frizz is dehydrated hair.  Hair that is dry and thirsty will draw water from the atmosphere and this is the cause of frizz.  So, the primary prevention to keep frizz at bay is "moisturized" tresses. I f your hair is severely damaged, you may need a protein treatment to help control/remedy damage tresses.

Product Build-Up.  Hair that has been previously hydrated and sealed with products like Shea Butter, Silicones, and heavy butters blocks out any moisture to dry hair.  This causes hair to not properly receive the benefits of layering another moisturizer to your tresses.

Damaged Hair.  Hair that is damaged have raise cuticles causing it to be frizzy. This is because your cuticles are "raised" and are no longer "smooth."  These areas of "raised" cuticles will need a "fill-in" such as protein.  Protein will "fill-in" these gaps and allow hair to become smoother again.

Products:  Product ingredients (because humectants attract moisture to the hair it can cause swelling which causes the hair to dry and frizz. It’s best to use products that contain humectants as leave ins during cooler months).

Hair Manipulation:  Hair in Hair Syndrome is a huge culprit in the cause of frizz for a slew of natural hair wearers.  We cannot keep our hands out of our hair.  This is over manipulation of our tresses and is a culprit of creating frizz!

How to Keep your Tresses Moisturized?

  1. Deep condition your tresses.  Shampoo your tresses to eliminate any product build up and then use a good deep conditioner to rehydrate your hair.
  2. Incorporate styling products into your daily routine that contain  hydrolyzed proteins like hydrolyzed silk, soy and wheat protein that can penetrate the hairs cuticle.

Keeping Frizz at Bay!

Understanding the causes of frizz will help you better choose a regimen to keep frizz at bay.  Products like gel stylers and silicone serums also will help in preventing huge bouts of frizz.

Keep your HANDS out of your hair.  It's a hard thing to do but your fingers disturbs the curl pattern because the oils and sealants on your strands are pulled away by your touching and manipulation of your strands.  This removes the very products on your hair that you trust to keep your hair shiny, bouncy, and frizz free.

Finally, once you have completed your initial Wash N Go only lightly mist hair!  Hair that hasn't thoroughly dried and is manipulated is prone to frizz!

How do you combat frizz?  Leave me a comment below!

My Hair LOVES This Stuff! Shea Moisture's Curling Gel Souffle

The warm weather is upon us and I've been experimenting with a new hair routine.  I had been previously using the Shea Moisture Peace Rose Oil Gel and Conditioner.  I liked the product but you have to use the Peace Rose regular Conditioner as a leave-in.  Anyhow, my hair has always loved the Shea Moisture Curling Soufflé Gel and I decided to try it for the warmer season since it is heavy on glycerin, by the way, which my hair simply adores.
My hair needs water at least every three days but in the warmer weather with perspiration and being outdoors more, I really prefer to rinse my hair under the shower nightly (daily).  I find that if I’m just rinsing my hair that the Shea Moisture Curling Soufflé Gel holds up very well unlike other products that tend to breakdown or needs to be reapplied after rinsing.  I also like to “oil rinse” my hair too and this product seems to compliment that regimen well.

I know, I know but that stickiness!  It makes most people feel as though they cannot “touch” their hair.  I really could not understand how Shea Moisture was still producing this product with all the initial complaints of the stickiness, the variation of consistencies from jar to jar, store to store, and seasons.  With all this against it, the product is still on the shelf with the other beloved Shea Moisture products.

I might just have a solution for you and the reason it is a stable in many naturals routines.  It works!  Hair of various textures and types love the stuff.  I also found this product to “play” well with other natural or non-natural product lines.

I purchased a jar from Walmart, note to self, don’t do that again.  I usually get mines from Walgreen.  This jar of soufflé was set like Jell-O.  I had to literally punch a hole in it.  I struggled through applying to my hair.  The third day, I took a plastic fork and “whipped” the soufflé until it became pliable and looked like beat up Jell-O!  Curls were banging, shiny, and was not drawn up like when I use a regular gel!  My hair was super soft, defined, and touchable.

Here's a few tips:

  1. Mix a “small” amount of the soufflé to your favorite styler or leave-in for a more touchable and less sticky feel.
  2. “TAP” the surface of the soufflé gel and apply directly to hair.
  3. Use “less” of the product!  Too much will cause excessive stickiness.
  4. Layer the product on in sections to gauge how much each section will need.

Finally, most naturals have attributed the “stickiness” to the agave that is in the product but I will tell you that the product “keeps” my hair “moisturized” for days!  Also, with my 3b -4a hair frizz is par for the course but the soufflé gel gives me ultimate frizz-less hair!  Love the stuff!
Don't forget to leave me a comment down below.

Shea Moisture Peace Rose Oil Complete Nourish and Silken Styling Gel-Cream

I came across this product while viewing the YouTuber Pretti Uneek Hair video.  I wasn't able to just go to my local Target store to get it.  I had to order it on-line.  So, I had it shipped to my local Target's and retrieved the product from there.

The reason I felt compelled to write a review about this product is because while on the train last Thursday, on a standing room only train, and she leaned down and whispered "what do you use on your hair?"  I looked to see a natural with fine curly hair similar to mines.  "She said your hair looks so healthy!"  My hair is 3c/4 and hers was mostly 3b but fine.

I had been using Shea Moisture's Peace Rose Conditioner and Gel-Cream.  My texture is very much like YouTuber Pretti Uneek Hair so I thought I give it a try.  I was right.  Now, I must warn you before you break out and run to your local Target store.  I love the way my hair reacts to this product.  However, the product "rose" smell is VERY strong and if you do not like products with strong odors, you will want to return the product.

I love roses and the smell is so realistic that it simply intrigues me.  The scent goes away in about an hour or so and can be refreshed when spritzing with water.

As with Shea Moisture's other products, it has a great price point of $10.99.  My hair was light and bouncy with a soft hold, the way I like my hair.  A little of this product goes a long way.  It is easy to apply to wet hair.  I have not tried to apply it to dry hair.

Winter Hair Care

Now that the winter is upon us, the need for a change in our hair routine is also necessary.  Things that we should adjust:

  • Wash Hair Less Often. Use this time to “leave your hair alone” or give it a winter rest. Less shampooing means less manipulation, product build-up, and gives you a lead way to employ protective styling.
  •       Pay Attention to Your Scalp.  Use a scalp treatment like “Jane Carter’s Scalp Nourishing Serum” to energize your scalp while protecting against bacteria and fungus.
  •       Do not Forget to Moisture at NightUsing a clear, conditioning cap will do the trick.  Lightly spritz your hair with water or your favorite liquid leave-in, cover with cap, and wrap with a scarf and you will wake of with slightly damp hair that you can shake and go.
  •       Deep Condition Your Tresses.  Winter is harsh on the body and hair.  Take time to pamper your hair with a deep conditioner of choice and watch your favorite TV show, movie or read a book.
  •        Trim Those Tresses!  This is a good time to trim those thin, see-through ends and prepare for summer styling!
  • Stay Away from Humectants!  PRODUCT ALERT!  In the winter, humectants, like glycerin, will pull moisture from your hair and release it into the winter air. This is the natural act of humectants,  In the spring and summer or humid climates, humectants will pull moisture from the atomosphere into our tresses!  Therefore, this will cause a change in the products that you use in warmer climates if you use products with humectants.
Keep It CoveredMake sure to cover your tresses with a hat or scarf to protect your ends and hair from the harsh and drying winds of winter.  I will usually use a clear conditioning cap or a scarf under a hat and when I get to work shake and style my hair.  Protecting your hair against rubbing against the material of your head wear will keep your strands protected.

No matter what the weather, your natural tresses desire MOISTURE!  Give it what it wants, and it will BEHAVE!

Love your curls!

Oil Rinsing

Your Hair is Extremely Dry?: An Oil Rinse May Be Your Answer!

An oil rinse has similar results to doing an a hot oil treatment.  To do a successful oil rinse, it is suggested that you do so in the shower.  However, it can be successfully done over a sink or a large bowl of water.  What is great about this technique is that it can be done throughout all seasons.

1. What is oil rinsing?

Oil rinsing is a technique that involves adding a liquefied oil or hair butter to your tresses. The oil or butter is then allowed to sit/absorb in your strands, with or without heat for anywhere from five to 20 minutes. After you have waited for the desired amount of time, the oil is then rinsed out of the hair. Some people will follow the rinsing of the oil with a co-wash product or conditioner. However, you can skip this step and simply blot your hair and proceed to style.

2. Is Pre-pooing and Oil Rinsing the Same Thing?

Pre-pooing is usually done before you either shampoo or co-wash your hair. If you have chosen to pre-poo, you should think about doing this procedure overnight to get the maximum benefit from the strand-penetrating oil of your choice.

However, for oil rinsing you do not need to saturate your hair overnight with an strand-penetrating oil like coconut, olive oil, or avocado oil. Oil rinsing can be done just before you co-wash since it is effective in aiding in detangling and adding slip when used.

What you will need:

1.       Any oil of your choice DOES NOT NEED to be a
penetrating oil ( coconut, olive, or avocado)

Technique:

  • Shampoo (or co-wash) Hair, as usual
  • Gently Wring/Twist Out All Excess Water
  • Apply Oil from Ends of your Hair to the Roots
  • Now,  Follow-up With Your Favorite Conditioner, As Usual
All Done!  Your hair will feel extremely soft and look shiny and healthy!

Benefits of Oil Rinsing:

Oil rinsing is thought to help hair in several ways including:
  • Will help soften your hair and relieve the crispy and dry feeling of your hair after a henna or protein treatment.
  • Refreshes Your Hair by increasing moisture and softness. Therefore, there will be no need to shampoo or co-wash hair after an Oil Rinse.
  • The additional oil will increase your slip factor and help to detangle hair and most importantly help to reduce frizz.
  • For those with natural hair with a curl definition, oil rinsing will help with defining your curl.
  • Increase shine to your hair.
  • Penetrating Oils will increase your strands ability to absorb and retain water molecules!
  • These oils will enter hair shaft and binds to the water molecules because of their polar structure.
  • When rinsed well, hair will be left shiny without feeling greasy!

Oil rinsing will leave a coating of oil on your hair. Coconut Oil hardens/solidifies at low/cold temperatures and should not be used to oil rinse in cold weather. Oil rinsing in cold air or winter calls for a oil/butter that will still stay liquidfied at cooler temperatures. Olive oil, castor oil, grapeseed oil, almond oil and shea butter are good candidates for oil rinsing.

3. Cons of Oil Rinsing

  1. Dandruff, scalp irritations, and eczema can be irritated by oil rinsing and should be avoided.
  2. Those whose hair has a tendency to form build-up or have a looser curl pattern may find that this method causes hair to be limp.
  3. If you ONLY co-wash , you may consider using a clarifying shampoo to make sure you prevent any oil build up.
  4. OIL ATTRACTS lint and dirt! You should schedule a shampoo within a week of your oil rinsing.

Natural Hair Summer Tips

Natural Hair Summer Tips

MOISTURIZE YOUR TRESSES TO WEATHER THE SUMMER RAYS

Image result for natural hair in summerWhen it comes to hair, I really can’t emphasis the importance of moisturizing enough.  Your moisturizing routine or lack thereof can literally make or break your hair. Your hair needs moisture!!! And water equals moisture. In the past, we have been taught that water makes our hair dry and brittle. Now we know, that is so false. Your hair needs water.

As most naturals know, your tresses need moisture!  That’s true for ALL seasons and one of the best moisturizers is W-A-T-E-R!  Your hair will thank you for drenching it with H2O!

You should spritz and seal you hair faithfully every night, this will help you keep more of your strands on your head.
Carrying a spray bottle of your favorite spritzer concoction with you when you leave the house is a good idea!  This will enable you to moisturizer your tresses after you have come out of extreme weather and wind.

Of course there is a down size to the extra spritzing that naturals know all too well and that is the dreaded shrinkage that will and can occur when spritzing your curls after you have styled you hair.  A good idea is to wear a spritzable hair style that will allow you to add moisture throughout the day without sacrificing your hairstyle.

As A Side Note:  If you have hard water, you can easily clarify it by simply adding apple cider vinegar.

Scarf it, or hat it!  Two great ways to protect not only your hair but your skin from the harsh rays of summer sun.  Use a protective style that will minimize you having to manipulate your hair.  You can than bandanna or use a nice hair tie or sheer scarf that will allow the welcomed cool breeze waft through to cool off your scalp.  Purchase a cute sinimay hat that is lightweight and allows your scalp to breathe.

3C Frizz Free Wash And Go Method

Image detail for -TWA Hairstyles - mane and chic | mane and chic

Combatting frizz for 3c coily hair types seem to permeate across the lines of styling, products, and hair routines.  This is an issue that most 3c’s will either be talking about, asking about, or simply have frustrated them.

I will share that the best weapon you have in your arsenal will be how you style your hair and apply your product.  For 3c coily types I suggest the following:

Method:  LOC – (L) Liquid (O) Oil (C) Cream

After co-washing or shampooing your hair we will be using the LOC method.  This method is best done in the shower!

Items you will need:  Leave-In, Oil, and a Cream-based Moisturizer

Section off your hair using duck clips, bobby pins, or some type of clip.

  • Make sure hair is thoroughly, super wet
  • To that section add the Leave-In of your choice
  • Follow this with an application of your favorite oil(s)

Now, here you can do one of two things, according to your own preference.
  1. Apply A Cream-based Moisturizer or
  2. Apply A Moisturizing Gel

Side Bar:
I have fine 3c hair and layering too much product (depending on what they are) can cause hair to become limp or weighed down.  However, for most 3c/4a types gels do an awesome job in defining your coils.

I’m one that does not like to apply gel to my hair and I will opt to just add the Cream-based moisturizer instead of the gel.  There are also times that I will apply gel by taking a scoop and placing in my hands and smoothing over each section for additional hold.

The primary objective of this method is this:  When you hair is soaking wet, your coils and curls will be the most defined and frizz-free that they will be.  It is taking the opportunity to  “freeze” the curls with gel to get a defined and frizz-free wash and go.

Think of it as this, when your section is not thoroughly wet , it will already start to frizz up.  So when you apply your gel to the hair you are actually “defining” frizzy hair!

Give this method a try and let me know how it worked for you!

Thanks for stopping by!

Natural Hair Combs for Your Natural

I'm always looking for ways to accent my natural hair and while looking on the internet I came across a company that makes natural hair combs.
The company is named Artist Tree and their website is:  http://www.artistreewoodart.com/wood-gifts.html.

Artistree Wood Art by Dale Randles

They create gifts out of wood, from shoehorns to wooden vases.  On this occasion my interest was concentrated on the hair comb selections.  Here are a few:

The artist writes about his combs:

Most wooden combs on the market today are cranked out in overseas factories. They are manufactured in huge lots using porous nondescript woods. by contrast, I sculpt each of my combs, painstakingly, one at a time, in my island workshop using only the finest hardwoods. Once a comb has been cut and shaped to my satisfaction, I sand it until each tooth is utterly smooth. My handcrafted hardwood combs will never snag your hair as factory made ones can, and, unlike plastic combs, they will never cause your hair to crackle with static electricity.
