Hair Matters: Understanding and Loving Your Natural Crown
Every Strand Has a Story!
Welcome to Hair Matters, beautiful people!
Whether you're just beginning your natural hair journey or have been wearing your beautiful curls, coils, and kinks for decades, there's always something new to discover about our hair.
When I began my natural hair journey in March 2010, I quickly learned that loving my natural hair meant learning to understand it. There were successful wash days, beautiful twist-outs, products that worked wonderfully, and others that had me wondering why I purchased them in the first place!
But through it all, I discovered something important:
Healthy natural hair isn't about achieving someone else's curl pattern. It's about understanding and caring for the beautiful crown God gave you.
Understanding Our Natural Hair Textures
Natural hair comes in a wonderful variety of patterns, and sometimes several textures grow from the same head!
Type 3A: Loose, well-defined curls that often form larger spirals.
Type 3B: Springy, medium-sized ringlets that may experience shrinkage and frizz.
Type 3C: Tighter, densely packed curls with smaller spiral formations.
Type 4A: Small, defined coils that often form an S-shaped pattern.
Type 4B: Tightly textured strands that may have less visibly defined curls and more bends or zigzag formations.
Type 4C: Very tightly coiled hair with significant shrinkage and curl patterns that may be less visible without styling.
Remember, these categories are only descriptions. Hair typing does not determine whether your hair is healthy, and no texture is better than another.
Hair Porosity: Why It Matters
Have you ever wondered why one person's favorite conditioner works beautifully for her hair but leaves yours feeling completely different?
Hair porosity may be part of the explanation.
Low-porosity hair has a cuticle structure that can make water absorption slower. Lightweight products and thorough wetting may work well.
Medium-porosity hair often absorbs and retains moisture relatively easily.
High-porosity hair may absorb water quickly but also lose it rapidly, especially when the cuticle has been affected by damage.
Rather than relying entirely on a porosity test, observe how your hair responds to washing, conditioning, drying, and styling.
Moisture, Moisture, and More Moisture!
One of the most discussed topics in the natural hair community is keeping our curls and coils moisturized.
But here's something I've learned: more products don't necessarily mean healthier hair.
Water is essential to hair hydration. A good conditioner can improve manageability, and styling products may help maintain your desired look.
A simple routine can include cleansing, conditioning, gentle detangling, applying an appropriate leave-in product when needed, and protecting your hair while sleeping.
And don't forget your ends! They are the oldest parts of your hair and often require extra care.
Protective Styling Without Neglecting Your Hair
Twists, braids, flat-twist updos, buns, and Bantu knots can be beautiful ways to reduce daily manipulation.
However, protective styles should never require painful tension around the hairline or scalp.
Give your edges some love, keep your scalp clean, and avoid leaving styles in so long that tangling and matting become problems.
Natural Hair As We Mature
Now, ladies, let's talk about something that deserves more attention!
As we mature, our hair can change. We may notice changes in density, texture, thickness, moisture needs, or the appearance of beautiful silver strands.
Those changes don't mean our natural hair journey is over.
They simply mean it's time to listen to our hair again.
Sometimes we need gentler styling, different conditioning products, less manipulation, or an updated routine.
Our crowns may change with the seasons of life, but their beauty does not disappear.
If you notice sudden or significant hair shedding, thinning, or scalp irritation, consider consulting a dermatologist rather than relying only on new products.
Your Crown, Your Journey
I created Crowning Glory Coils and Kinks because I believe our natural hair journeys deserve to be celebrated and shared.
Here we'll continue exploring natural hair care, styling ideas, product experiences, and the lessons we've learned along the way.
And remember:
Love your curls. Embrace your coils. Celebrate your kinks.
And learn YOUR hair!
Until next time, beautiful people!
