Big Chop The Second Time Around

For most Big Choppers, the goal is to have healthy, vibrant, and beautiful hair.  However, usually in the back of their minds the biggest goal is to grow their hair back to the length that they Big Chop from.

Nowadays, those Big Choppers of three years ago have obtained great length and have now decided to Big Chop AGAIN!  Why?

There are several reasons why these beautiful women have decided to Big Chop.  First and foremost was that Big Chopping has taken them back to a period when the upkeep of their Big Chop routine was much simpler!

I have also entertained the thought of Big Chopping again.  When I Big Chopped in March of 2010, I had NEVER in my life had short hair!  Now, my hair (stretched) is almost bra length and the upkeep of my hair routine has also become longer!

Detangling becomes a MAJOR issues and now has to really be placed on my "To Do" list! There are the days that I long for the days when I could simply run my fingers through my hair with my leave-in and gel and walk out the door!  This does not happen at the length I am now.

Listen to these ladies and make up your own mind if this is for you. Enjoy the videos!

Texas Pastor Forbids The Wearing of Weaves in His Church!

Pastor A.J. Aamir ofResurrecting Faithin Waco, Texas believes if it didn’t grow from your scalp, it doesn’t belong there.

no weaves in church A.J. Aamir

The Pastor made this comment to an organization called "American Preachers."  He further told them that he had "instructed" his female staffers to not "wear weaves" to work.  His words were:  " because “our black women are getting weaves trying to be something and someone they are not. Be real with yourself is all I’m saying.”

His called to action was the fact that he has  "a 26 year old mother in my church has a $300 weave on her head.  No,  I will not be quiet about this.   Sadly, this statement is surely repeated amongst his poor and financially strapped church.  His comments has paralyzed our church and culture with stepping across the boundary of personal choice.

Most intelligent persons of our community would agree that if you cannot pay your rent, you should rethink spending $300 of it on your head!  We are not privy to how she obtained the money to get the weave, it could have been donated or gifted to her.  Whatever the case, it simply is not our business! However, to simply "ban" a fashion statement from "your" church, which I thought Christ was the Head of, is just crossing the line.  It is not clear as to whether or not Pastor Aamir is speaking on Christ's behalf or not.

My primary issue with this blatant statement is based on this premise:  If Miss Can't Pay My Rent, placed her $300 in the collection plate, I do not believe that the good ole' Pastor Aamir would go running after her to return it!  Understanding that Pastor Aamir grew up in a "strict" muslim home sheds more light on his opposition to weave wearers and his feeling as though he has authority to tell the women of his church how they should wear their hair!

This story reminds me of the one found in John 8:1 - 11 (woman found in adultery) - The Pastor has taken a stone and has thrown it!  Unless, he has and remains faultless in the realm of debt and finances his approach has been without compassionate and not exhibiting a Christ-like manner of the One he is assumed to represent.

The scripture states:

Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—1 Peter 3:3

In understanding the above-noted scripture, we should not be concerned with the hair on the sister's head but the condition of her heart!  The Word of God is powerful and quick and pierces to the marrow and bone and if handled correctly can and will root out whatever insecurities one may have -- if they are willing.  However, God has not created any of us to be someone else's Holy Ghost!

The neglect to pay one's rent vs. paying $300 on a weave goes way beyond the fact that she is wearing a WEAVE!  Weave wearers know the price can range from $100 and upward into the thousands.   Ever since I can remember attending Church, male Preachers have made fun of, or ridiculed women for the wigs, clothes, hands on the hips, and gossiping.   Mind you that the Church is made up of over 90% women, male Preachers are still bashing women who are their primary support to the Church!

I wore tracks in my hair for years.  A pack of top of the line hair costing over $100 for 4 ounces. However, as other things changed in my life (financially) the once affordable hair style of $50 had risen to over $150 to redo, aside from the every two-week maintenance of $70 that I was faithful to.  This hairstyle was no longer a viable option and I stopped and went natural but this was a decision I came too on my own and was not berated into.

We've just seen Beyonce go from waist-length flowing blonde, billowing waves to a pixie cut, and then to a Blonde Bob cut!  She has plenty of money -- is it alright for her to attend the Church wearing her weave.  Would she be questioned about her self-esteem issues and not wearing her natural, God-given hair, whatever that might look like!?

A lesson of economics, responsibility, and good stewardship would be the most effective solution to remedy this issue but to "ban" a hairstyle is simply way out in left field.   A discussion on how, we as a culture, support a billion dollar industry that does little or nothing to enhance and support our community is a viable subject.  Making decisions to destroy the hold of this industry on our community is also another viable discussion.  Getting a better understanding as to why we gravitate to weave wearing instead of wearing our natural hair, to me, is beating a dead horse.  It's a matter of choice!  Provoking people to a closer relationship with God and soul-healing is a more effective choice!   I would quickly find myself another place of worship over this dictatorship!

This was my say...leave your comments and thoughts below!

Here is my review for Curl Kit's July 2013 subscription box.  This month's box had a make-over.  The box is white with the Curl Kit logo scrolled across it.  It was a pleasant surprise and a nice touch and a diversion from the grey box, which I also like.

Following is what was included in this month's Curl Kit Box:

Eden Bodyworks Jojoba Deep Conditioner (sample) ▪Hi Pro Pac Extremely Damaged Hair Intense Protein Treament (sample)▪Curls Cashmere Curls (sample) ▪Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel (squeeze bottle)▪Eco Custard Argan Oil▪Luscious Locks Shea Butter Shampoo▪CB Smoothe Styling Creme

I've noted the products that were samples, otherwise, all else were regular size products.  The only two products that I was familiar with, previously, was the Eco Styler Olive Oil and the Curls product.

I have tried the Eco Styler Argan Custard, that was included in the Curl Kit, and made notations accordingly.

Curls Cashmere Curls
(SAMPLE)

Product Description

This product is good for FINE to MEDIUM hair textures, I would not recommend for most 4s.  Even 3cs, like myself, have reported frizzy hair by mid-day with just using this product as a Leave-In or Styler.  You must also be mindful that the ingredients in the product sold on Curls website is "all natural" and the products sold by Target does not say that it is all natural.

There is also a price difference of about $3.00.

I tried this custard this morning, August 5, 2013 and was pleasantly surprised.  It didn't glide on like the regular Eco Styler gel but product was creamy and easy to apply.  In approximately an hour to an hour and half my hair was dried.

What I loved most about the custard, was that it did not leave my hair plastered to my head!  Hair was not crunchy, and I was able to easily fluff for more volume.

This is a keeper!

Luscious Locks Shea Butter Shampoo

This product is apparently new to the market and other than YouTube reviews, little else information was available.  I will update.

CB Smoothe Naturally
http://www.cbsmoothe.com/products/

Smooth Naturally Curly Pudding Crème keeps your curls looking and feeling luscious. Curly Pudding Crème adds shine, moisture, bounce and strength to your natural curl pattern all through the day. Curly Pudding Crème puts the fabulous in your curls.

I could not find a price for the item since their products are sold through distribution.

I haven't tried this product yet but I did open it and found a very light to faint fragrance of melon.  Product is very creamy and smooth.

After trying the Eco Styler Argan Oil Custard, I have decided that I would not purchase the product after I finish using it up or pass it along to my natural-haired co-worker.   Even though the crunch is controllablem, and those who know me well know that I don't mind the crunch, I just did not find the product moisturizing enough for me.  By the second day, I was spritzing my hair mid-day at work with plain water.  I also found that it did not add the shine that I was accustomed to with other styling products.

I feel that the product could be much better with a tweaking of additional conditioner and added nourishing oils.

Weave, A Protective Style? Your Kidding Right?

www.fabulousnaturalhair.com
I was asked, on Facebook by my friend Carmen, to respond to a blog article called "Opinion:  A Weave is Not a Protective Style; It's Just A Weave."  This article or blog was written by Black Girl With Long Hair on July 10, 2013, and garnered some adversarial comments, which was to be expected. I, personally, agreed with the writer and thought it a viable discussion.

best-hair-weave-black-women  At first, I really didn't give it much thought but the photograph the blogger headed her article with was what really caught my attention.  My friend Carmen had also sent me another Face Book suggestion concerning weaves and severe hair line loss and so I figured I'd jump right into the weave controvesy with this article.

The model has apparently dyed the front of her hair a bright Auburn (left photo) and combed her hair into a similar color-related weave.  What is definitely obvious, with colors like this, is that the tones of hair color and the model's textures do not match as well as a more natural 2 or 1b hair coloring. Putting this aside, is a weave a protective style.  No, it is not!

However, it does use a protective styling method to accomplish its end goal of

http://blackgirllonghair.com/2013/07/opinion-a-weave-is-not-a-protective-style-its-just-a-weave/

creating an, as natural-looking, weaving style as possible.  This is accomplish by cornrowing the clients hair to create a "smooth" and flat base on which to attach the tracks of hair to the client's head.

Protective

chimeedwards.com
Adjective

1.  Capable of or intended to protect someone or something.
2.  Having or showing a strong wish to keep someone or something safe from harm.
Synonyms

defensive - preventive

We can readily agree that the information presented is about protective styling and we split off into other factions from there as to what constitutes protective styling.

I found a great definition from the Natural Hair Dictionary.

Protective Hairstyle (Hair Style) – This is a style that requires little manipulation, protects the ends of the hair by keeping them tucked away and allows regular moisturizing. Common styles like twists, coils, flat twists and cornrows can all be converted to protective styles by tucking or hiding the ends.

As many of us know, the natural hair community has been steadily expanding, evolving, and excitingly making change in our social and economic environments.  This is where I first heard the term "protective styling."  Reason-being that African American hair tends to be dry and needs additional moisture to keep it viable and help to retain length.

         mediumhairstyleupdate.com
In fact, more than likely, if you were to Google the term "protective styling" you will see a woman of color sporting an innovative twist, bun, cornrow, or swank hairstyle.  This technique is used by the different natural hair textures as a way to keep the ends of their natural hair from becoming dried out, raggedy, plagued with single-strand knots, and constantly manipulated by styling combs, braiding, and pulling.

The primary purpose of protective styling for hair is to reduce breakage of your hair so that you can retain hair length.

Naturals, especially, have complaints that the ends of their hair are filled with fabric because their hair is constantly rubbing against their clothes.  Hair getting caught in their jewelry, on chairs, in seatbelts, and suffering from drying episodes from being exposed to the climate or environment.

A few natural hair bloggers have included weaves as a protective hair option.  However, unlike wigs, which can be removed easily and makes your hair accessible for upkeep, and true protective styling, You cannot properly take care of your tresses while hair is "covered" by a weave that is usually worn four to six weeks or longer.  Yes,  the hair can grow like weeds under the weave but what is the state and condition of the hair?  You must also consider the amount of usual hair that has been shed, dirt, expiration and oils that have incurred while hair has been closed in by the weave.
www.polyvore.com

Negative Effects of Weave on Tresses

The longer the hair remains under the weave, the looser your hair becomes, allowing room for unnecessary friction to the new growth.  The hair can become "matted" when weaves are left in for long periods.

Moisturizing and maintaining the scalp by applying oils and water can cause the hair to become matted. The "tension" applied when installing weaves can be a great detriment to one's scalp and roots.  This can cause hair strands to be pulled out by its roots.

We aren't even talking about the damage that is done to the clients who are long-term weave wearers.

Unfortunately, many women neglect effective care of their hair because the weave allows them the privilege to do so.  Therefore, knocking it off the list of protectve styling.

Weaves Are A Styling Options

Weaves, of any textures, allows the wearer more syling options.  There's nothing wrong with desiring to wear one's hair straight and flowing, and experience it flapping in the wind. Or, having spiraling curls cascade downs one's back! Or to have a bounty of curls that can shame that of a lion!  Undeniably, weaves are convenient, stylish, wearable and fashionable!  However, a protective style, I beg to differ!
www.essence.com

Requirements Of A Protective Style

  • It should allow easy and quick access to your scalp to keep it moisturized and clean.
  • You should be able to maintain the hair/style with minimal  fuss and manipulation to your tresses.
  • A Style that is easily covered at night, while sleeping.
  • Allows hair to breathe while keeping the ends tucked in or covered.
  • Effective Protective Styling
Weaves are a wonderful option, when taken care of your hair underneath it, for women of color.  Whether the options are short, curly, or long and flowing, it sets the styling bar for women who even just want to give
their hair a "rest" from a period of manipulation.

Protective Styling, for naturals, is an option that allows women to wear their natural hair while doing their best to protect it from the reality of daily manipulation and the environment.

Weave wearing or protective styling is a choice for the individual wearer and each option needs to be respected. Short, long, curly, or added...hair is our Crown and we should wear it with grace!

As always,  Happy Curls to You!

Shea Moisture Organic Black Soap Purification Masque -- In Review

$9.99 for 8 ounces

Shea Moisture Purification Masque

I will start off this review by saying that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this product.  In fact, it was the only product from this line that I tried and liked!

I was given this product to try by my natural-haired 4c coworker who simply loved the product herself and is an avid user of the Shea Moisture product line.  Of course, the first thing that I did was to open up the jar and the smell of ripe bananas wafted through the air!  I had wanted to try a bentonite clay treatment but was not looking forward to the mess of having to mix it and then apply it.  This seemed to be a great alternative to that.  The consistency was that of a light custard mix with fine sand, it was shakeable and creamy but thick enough to not swoosh out of the jar.

How I Applied the Masque

I did not cowash my hair before I applied the Shea Moisture Purification Masque.  I was able to simply use my fingers to lift product from the jar and "smooth" onto my hair.  I started out applying the masque on dry, sectioned hair (4) and wasn't liking the results.  I realized that I had been wearing a wash n' go, which is what I do 99% of the time.  So, I stopped and dampen my hair with plain water and the application of water under the product immediately smooth out the texture of my hair and dissolved my tangles.

I also realized that using the water under the product allowed me to use much less of the product which yielded great results.  The product simply melted my hair into a smooth, warm butter!

After the application of the masque, I took the extra step of massaging my scalp from front to back and then I covered my head with a plastic cap and since I had applied the product before just going to bed, I kept it on throughout the night.  In the morning, hair was moist and I could easily run my fingers through my 3c-4 type hair.  I then rinsed out the masque and applied my Tresemme Naturals Conditioner as my leave-in.

My Results

I ended up with soft and shiny coils and kinks!  Hair was bouncy and soft to the touch.  There was the faintest smell of the masque, which I liked.

Curl Keeper

30 ml ounce (Sample) $6.50
Amazon.com sells the 8 fl. ounce of the Curl Keeper for $14.78.  The biggest complaint about this product is that most people do not like the smell and causes the hair to dry hard.  The consistency of the product is watery but does contain the frizz and helps your tresses to clump better instead of giving you that Ramen Noodle look!

However, a large majority of users layer it under their gel and scrunch out the hardness later and the smell dissipates after hair has completely dried. This is one of those products that people either overboard love it or don't like it.

Product Description

Dryness causes fizziness and out of control hair. Curl keeper controls all frizz and allows you to become the master of gorgeous frizz free curls. Curl keeper is water based which means you can use it every day without product buildup. Your style will last for days as its unique formula re activates with water making curl keeper 100% effective in humid weather conditions.

Ingredients:

DI Water, PVP/VA Copolymer, Propylene Glycol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Laureth 23, Glycerin, DMDM Hydantoin, Fragrance, Polyquaternium 10.

Directions:

Comb Curl KeeperTM through wet hair from roots to ends for an even application... FOR VERY FRIZZY HAIR, USE ADDITIONAL PRODUCT. The less movement that occurs during the first 15 minutes, the more control you will have over the frizz. Once your hair dries, you can easily soften your look by simply moving your hair around. The more you play with your hair the more volume you will achieve. Some people start appreciating their volume and curls once they have total control over the frizz. The Curl KeeperTM formula re-activates with water, so simply re-wetting frizzy areas with wet hands could get you many fantastic frizz-free days between shampoos

Curl Max Twisty Curly Spray

$5.95 - $6.99 8 ounces

After researching this product, it seems to do best or perform well on 4b to 4c hair textures.  It tends to "dry out" 3b's to 4's" hair texture when doing a "wash n' go" hairstyle.  For those users, it's best to dampen hair, apply Curl Max and then "style" hair.

Product has a great smell, sprays out of bottle well, and makes hair soft and manageable.  This product contains glycerin and when used too much can cause the hair to feel sticky.

This product is not Curly Girl "friendly."

Ingredients:
Water (Agua), VP/ Methacrylamide/Vinyllmidazole Copolymer, Glycerine, Polysorbate 20, Argonia Spinsosa (Argon) Oil, Fragrance (Fragrancia), Disodium EDTA, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Triethanolamine, Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, Peg-8 Dimethicone, DMDM Hydantoin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice

Directions

For daily use. Shampoo hair and towel dry. Spray Lustrasilk Curl Max Twisty Curly Spray evenly from roots to ends. Scrunch hair and air dry or blow dry with a diffuser if necessary.

Product Description

Lustrasilk Curl Max Twisty Curly Spray quickly activates spiral curls with no frizz. Curl Max, Twisty Curly Spray is enriched with Argan Oil and is designed to quickly activate spiral curls in naturally curly, wavy or permed hair. This non-sticky, alcohol-free spray produces curls you can count on while the lightweight, anti-frizz formula gives your hair a lasting, glossy shimmer. Let the beauty of your hair shine through with Lustrasilk!

Smells too delicious to put in your skin but their motto is:  Pooka products are "something good for your skin to eat!"

Itiba Papaya Body Lotion

I liked the tropical and earthy look of the site.  It was inviting and beautifully soothing.  The site even offers to give you a tour of the Island!

An 8 fl ounce bottle of the lotion costs $12.60 to ship to my address cost an additional $13.50 for a total cost of $26.10!  Just no an expense I would incur unless sharing the shipping cost with someone else.

However, I found another site that sells the product called John Paul Selects $14.00 for 8 ounces and here are the shipping costs:

USPS Standard Post$6.85
USPS Priority Mail$6.95
UPS Ground$10.76
UPS 2nd Day Air$25.74

From their website:

Sweet, green, juicy this is a true prize of the Caribbean! A wonderful, Caribbean fragrance that is sure to satiate your senses!

Another successful Curl Kit!  I, of course, liked the Oyin Hair Dew -- would have liked a FULL-SIZE container but it was a nice size sample.

So far, I'm really liking the Caviar Curls Velvet Leave-In Conditioner.  I did leave a posted question on the Curl Kit Face Book Page asking where this product can be purchased.  Will update this post with their response!

I'm in love with the Pooka Lemon-Aide!  I just open the jar to smell it!  Simply divine!  (smiling!)

The Itiba smells like the tropics and is worth the purchase if it can be bought at a cheaper shipping cost.

The Lustrasilk, for me, will be a no go.  Smells nice.  However, I'm a wash n' go wearer and this product will find little use in my regimen since I rarely do twists or braid-outs.

Thanks for stopping by and reading my Review.  Please, comment and subscribe!

Happy Curls to You!
