Crowning Glory — Coils & Kinks
There is something undeniably beautiful about a woman who has learned to embrace herself—her complexion, her features, her individuality, and yes, the beautiful crown of hair growing from her scalp!
Ladies, our natural hair journey has always been about more than curls, coils, kinks, twist-outs, or wash-and-go hairstyles. It is also a journey of discovery, confidence, self-acceptance, and freedom.
When I originally shared my Hair Say inspiration in 2013, the natural hair movement was encouraging countless women to reconsider what they had been taught about their hair.
Many of us were discovering something extraordinary: the hair we had spent years trying to straighten, stretch, disguise, or change was beautiful just as it was.
And that message remains just as meaningful today.
Your Crown Is Enough
For generations, Black women have encountered beauty standards that did not always celebrate our natural textures.
Some of us grew up believing that straight hair was more manageable, professional, or attractive. Others were taught that our natural coils were simply too difficult to maintain.
But somewhere along the journey, a powerful realization began to emerge.
Our hair was never the problem. The limitations placed upon its beauty were.
Whether your curls fall softly around your shoulders, your coils form a magnificent afro, or your hair is cropped into a beautifully shaped tapered cut, your crown deserves appreciation.
You do not have to change your texture to deserve admiration.
Different Textures, Same Beauty
One of the things I love most about natural hair is its remarkable versatility.
Our crowns can be styled in countless beautiful ways: tightly defined curls, fluffy twist-outs, finger coils, tapered cuts, locs, elegant updos, and magnificent afros.
No two heads of hair are exactly alike.
Even women with similar curl patterns may experience differences in density, strand thickness, porosity, shrinkage, and styling preferences.
That is why comparing our hair journeys can sometimes rob us of the joy of discovering what works for us.
Your hair does not have to look like anyone else's to be beautiful.
Learn your texture. Understand its needs. Celebrate its uniqueness.
And most importantly, enjoy the journey!
Natural Hair Is Not a Competition
Ladies, can we talk?
Sometimes, within the natural hair community, we unintentionally create new expectations while trying to escape the old ones.
We admire perfectly defined curls and beautiful waist-length hair. We celebrate impressive growth, elaborate styling techniques, and those seemingly effortless wash-and-go results.
But what about the woman whose hair shrinks dramatically?
What about the woman who prefers a short afro?
What about the sister who struggles with dryness, tangling, or finding time for an elaborate hair routine?
Her crown is beautiful, too!
Healthy hair comes in different lengths, textures, and styles.
And choosing to wear your hair naturally should never become another source of pressure.
Confidence Begins Within
A beautiful hairstyle can certainly brighten our day. But lasting confidence begins with how we see ourselves.
There is something liberating about looking into the mirror and appreciating the woman looking back.
Not because every curl is perfectly defined.
Not because every strand falls into place.
But because you recognize your own worth.
A woman who knows who she is does not have to seek permission to be beautiful.
And when she embraces her individuality, something wonderful happens.
She begins to wear her crown with confidence!
Taking Care of the Crown You Love
Celebrating natural hair also means learning how to care for it with patience and consistency.
You do not need dozens of expensive products or an overwhelming routine.
Instead, focus on what your individual hair needs: gentle cleansing, conditioning, careful detangling, moisture, protection from unnecessary damage, and occasional trimming when your ends require attention.
As your hair changes through the seasons and different stages of life, your routine may change, too.
That's perfectly normal!
The goal is not to achieve someone else's version of perfect hair.
The goal is to keep your own crown feeling and looking its best.
A Word to the Woman Thinking About Giving Up
Perhaps you've experienced a few frustrating wash days.
Maybe your twist-out didn't turn out as expected, your curls refuse to cooperate, or you're beginning to wonder whether natural hair is worth the effort.
Remember why you began your journey.
Give yourself permission to experiment, simplify your routine, and try something different.
If you choose a protective style, enjoy it. If you want to wear your afro big and beautiful, do it! If you decide to straighten your hair occasionally, that choice belongs to you as well.
Your hair journey should empower you, not imprison you.
And regardless of how you style it, never forget that your beauty extends far beyond your hair.
My Final Hair Say
Ladies, I believe every woman deserves the freedom to express her beauty without criticism, comparison, or unnecessary judgment.
Our curls, coils, and kinks tell a story of individuality, creativity, and cultural beauty.
They are not something to apologize for.
They are something to celebrate!
So lift your head, smile at your reflection, and wear your crown with confidence.
Because beautiful, you have always been enough.
Happy Curls to You!
