Hello, My Beautiful Naturalistas!
Ladies, can we talk about summer hair for a moment?
You know how it goes! The temperature starts climbing, the humidity makes its grand entrance, and suddenly that perfectly styled hair we worked on for an hour has a mind of its own!
LOL! We've all been there!
Summer is a wonderful season for enjoying outdoor activities, vacations, family gatherings, and those beautiful sunny afternoons. But when it comes to natural hair, we want styles that are not only attractive but also comfortable, manageable, and easy to maintain.
And let's not forget those of us who are constantly on the go!
Whether you're heading to the office, attending church, enjoying brunch with friends, or simply running errands, your natural hair can be stylish without requiring hours of preparation.
Today, I'm sharing some summer styling inspiration for our beautiful curls, coils, and kinks!
A Look Back at Summer 2021
When I originally wrote this article in 2021, many of us were beginning to return to our regular routines after spending so much time at home.
And ladies, those hair bonnets certainly had their moment! LOL!
There were days when comfort took priority over everything else.
But as we started heading back into workplaces, social gatherings, and everyday activities, we began looking for simple ways to refresh our appearance.
One hairstyle especially caught my attention: a beautiful variation of the wash-and-go featuring small twists at the front, decorative gold accessories, and loose natural curls in the back.
What a lovely way to combine elegance with simplicity!
And the wonderful thing is that this look remains just as stylish today.
1. The Accessorized Wash-and-Go
Let's start with the hairstyle that inspired this article.
Imagine beautifully defined natural curls flowing freely, while the front section is gently twisted away from the face and decorated with gold cuffs or hair jewelry.
Elegant without being overly complicated!
This style works with many curl patterns, although the final look will vary depending on your hair's density, length, and texture.
How to create the look:
Begin with clean, conditioned, gently detangled hair.
Apply your preferred leave-in conditioner and compatible styling product.
Create several small twists or flat twists near the front or sides.
Allow the remaining curls to dry in your preferred wash-and-go style.
Add lightweight gold hair cuffs or decorative accessories once the twists are secure.
Be careful that decorative cuffs don't have sharp edges or snag your strands.
And remember, ladies, the twists should never pull tightly against your scalp.
The beauty of this hairstyle is that you can dress it up or down!
2. The Beautiful Pineapple Puff
Who doesn't appreciate a good pineapple hairstyle?
This style is especially useful when you want to lift your hair away from your neck during warmer weather.
Gather your curls loosely toward the top of your head, using a soft hair tie or scarf.
Leave the curls free to form a beautiful puff.
You can add a colorful headband, satin scarf, or a few decorative accessories for extra personality.
One important tip: avoid pulling your hair too tightly around the edges.
Your hairstyle should be comfortable, not something that leaves your scalp feeling sore!
3. The Classic Twist-Out
Ladies, the twist-out never seems to go out of style!
And there's a reason for that.
It's versatile, beautiful, and can create an entirely different look depending on how you section and unravel your twists.
For a more defined style, create smaller twists and allow them to dry completely before separating.
For a fuller, softer appearance, use larger sections and gently fluff the roots after unraveling.
The result can be a gorgeous hairstyle suitable for everyday activities, church, or a summer evening out.
And if the weather brings a little frizz?
Sometimes that extra volume gives the style even more personality!
4. The Half-Up, Half-Down Natural Style
This is another beautiful option when you want your curls visible without having all your hair falling around your face.
Gather the front or upper portion of your hair into a loose puff, bun, or twist arrangement.
Allow the back section to remain free.
Add an elegant clip, scarf, or decorative pin.
This style gives you the best of both worlds: a little structure in the front and plenty of curl movement in the back.
It's also a wonderful way to showcase a fresh twist-out or braid-out.
5. The Elegant Low Puff or Bun
Now, ladies, sometimes we need a hairstyle that says:
"I'm ready for business!"
LOL!
A low puff or gently gathered bun is a timeless option that can transition beautifully from daytime errands to more formal occasions.
Use a little water-based styling product if needed to help with manageability.
Smooth the hair gently without excessive brushing or tension.
And don't feel pressured to make every strand perfectly flat.
Natural texture is beautiful!
A soft scarf, decorative clip, or pair of statement earrings can finish the look.
Summer Hair Care: Don't Forget About Moisture!
Styling is fun, but caring for our hair is just as important.
Warm temperatures, outdoor activities, swimming, and frequent styling can all influence how our hair feels and behaves.
Here are a few things worth remembering.
Keep a consistent conditioning routine. Choose products that help your hair feel manageable and reduce friction when detangling.
Pay attention to your ends. The ends are the oldest parts of our hair, so gentle handling matters.
Protect your hair when swimming. Wet your hair with clean water before entering a pool, consider wearing a swim cap, and rinse afterward to remove pool chemicals or saltwater.
Be mindful of humidity. Humidity can affect curl definition and cause some styles to expand or shrink. That's normal!
Protect your scalp from prolonged sunlight. A breathable hat or shade can help when spending extended time outdoors.
Remember, healthy hair care is not about finding one magical product.
It's about discovering a routine that works for your own beautiful crown.
Summer Style Can Be Simple and Beautiful
One thing I've learned over the years is that a beautiful natural hairstyle doesn't always require a complicated routine.
Sometimes a few twists, a decorative accessory, and a little confidence are all you need.
And ladies, let's be clear.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing a hair bonnet when you're relaxing at home or protecting your hair at night.
Comfort has its place!
But when we feel like dressing things up, it's wonderful to have styling options that complement our lifestyles.
Whether your hair is 3A, 3C, 4A, 4B, or 4C, you deserve to enjoy its versatility.
Your curl pattern doesn't determine your beauty.
And you certainly don't need to spend hours trying to make your hair look like someone else's.
My Final Thoughts
Looking back at this article from 2021 reminds me how much our natural hair journeys continue to evolve.
The styles may change.
Our favorite products may change.
And we may even discover that hairstyles we once found difficult have become part of our everyday routines.
But one thing remains the same.
Our natural hair is beautiful, versatile, and worthy of celebration!
So, ladies, enjoy those summer days.
Try a new hairstyle.
Add a little gold accessory if you're feeling fancy!
And don't be afraid to let your natural curls and coils shine.
