Hello, my beautiful Curl Friends!
Every now and then, I look back through my natural hair journey and remember products that made a lasting impression.
Some products came and went without much excitement. Others became staples in our hair care routines. And then there were those special small businesses that captured our attention, earned our loyalty, and made us genuinely sad when they closed.
ReVe Essentials was one of those brands for me.
When Natural Hair Businesses Were Making Their Mark
Back in the early days of the natural hair movement, discovering a new product line was exciting!
We were watching YouTube reviews, reading blogs, exchanging styling tips, and learning about ingredients that could help us care for our beautiful curls and coils.
Independent natural hair businesses played an important role in those conversations.
They introduced us to products created with textured hair in mind. They also gave us the opportunity to support entrepreneurs who understood our experiences.
ReVe Essentials was one of the names that caught my attention.
My Personal Experience With ReVe Essentials
I remember trying their products and being particularly impressed with their moisturizer and shea butter.
And ladies, you know how much I appreciate a good moisturizer!
What made the experience memorable wasn't simply the product itself.
I appreciated the customer service, the prompt shipping, and how easy it was to communicate with the company.
Those things matter, especially when you're supporting a smaller business.
For me, ReVe Essentials represented more than another jar sitting on my bathroom shelf. It represented the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit that helped the natural hair community grow.
The Announcement That Surprised Me
On February 27, 2014, I wrote about receiving an email announcing that ReVe Essentials would close effective February 28, 2014.
I remember feeling genuinely surprised.
The announcement explained that production had ended and that the company was moving on to other interests.
I had enjoyed their products and had watched the brand receive attention throughout the natural hair community.
Naturally, I was disappointed to see them go.
Looking back, I also recognize something important: running a successful small business requires much more than creating a product people love.
There are production costs, inventory, customer service, marketing, fulfillment, and countless behind-the-scenes responsibilities.
We don't always know what challenges a business owner may be facing, and a company's decision to close deserves respect.
Why Supporting Small Natural Hair Businesses Still Matters
One thing I have learned over the years is that independent beauty entrepreneurs contribute something valuable to our community.
They bring fresh ideas, specialized products, personal experiences, and a willingness to serve customers whose needs haven't always received enough attention.
Today, shoppers have more opportunities to discover products made for different curl patterns, textures, and styling preferences.
But the independent entrepreneurs who helped build interest in natural hair care deserve recognition.
Supporting these businesses can mean purchasing their products, sharing an authentic review, recommending a favorite product to a friend, or simply taking time to recognize their work.
And when a business closes, its contribution doesn't have to disappear from our memories.
What ReVe Essentials Taught Me
As I revisit this old article, I'm reminded that my natural hair journey has always been about more than finding the perfect product.
It has also been about discovery, community, and supporting the people who help us celebrate our natural beauty.
Not every product becomes a permanent staple.
Not every business stays open forever.
But a positive experience can leave a lasting impression.
ReVe Essentials, thank you for being part of my natural hair journey!
My Final Thoughts
Ladies, when you discover a small business that provides wonderful products and excellent customer service, take a moment to show your appreciation.
Leave a thoughtful review.
Tell someone about your experience.
And celebrate the entrepreneurs who continue to serve our beautiful natural hair community.
Because our journey isn't just about curls, coils, and kinks.
It's also about connection, creativity, and community.
