Hello, my beautiful Curl Friends! 💕
Let me take you back to January 2014, when finding a sale on our favorite natural hair products was cause for celebration!
I originally shared this article because Walgreens was offering a promotion on select SheaMoisture products. At the time, many of us were building our natural hair collections, discovering new ingredients, and experimenting with products that promised softer curls, less frizz, and better moisture retention.
Well, ladies, the sale has long since ended, but the conversation about choosing the right products is still worth having!
Today, we're revisiting three SheaMoisture favorites from my original article and discussing what they taught us about caring for our beautiful curls and coils.
A note from the archives: The Walgreens promotion ran January 12–18, 2014. Prices, packaging, formulations, and product availability may have changed. This is a historical product spotlight, not a current sale announcement.
1. SheaMoisture Yucca & Baobab Anti-Breakage Masque
This was one of the products featured in that original Walgreens promotion.
A conditioning masque is designed to give our hair a little extra attention. Depending on its formulation, it may help soften strands, improve manageability, and reduce friction during detangling.
And ladies, you know how important gentle detangling can be when we're caring for tightly curled and coily hair!
One thing I've learned over the years is that moisture and breakage prevention go hand in hand with how we handle our hair. Even a good conditioning product cannot replace patience, gentle styling, and protecting those fragile ends.
When choosing a masque today, pay attention to how your hair feels after rinsing. Is it softer? Easier to detangle? Does it feel weighed down? Those observations matter more than the promises printed on the jar.
2. SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk
Now, this is the type of product that catches my attention because I appreciate soft, touchable curls!
A styling milk generally has a lighter, lotion-like texture than a rich butter or heavy cream. Depending on your hair's needs, it may work as part of your moisturizing and styling routine.
For those of us with fine strands, including my own 3C/4A curls, the amount of product can make a tremendous difference.
Too much product can leave our curls looking limp instead of lively. I prefer beginning with a small amount, distributing it evenly, and adding more only where necessary.
The goal isn't to coat our hair with everything in the cabinet. It's to find the combination that gives us the softness, manageability, and definition we enjoy.
3. SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Soufflé
Ah, the Curling Gel Soufflé!
Products like this can be especially interesting because they combine the idea of curl styling with ingredients intended to help manage moisture.
Some formulas contain humectants, which interact with moisture in the surrounding environment. Depending on the weather, product combination, and your particular strands, the results can vary.
In humid conditions, some naturals enjoy the softness that a humectant-rich product provides. Others find that their curls become puffier or lose some definition.
That doesn't mean the product is necessarily bad. It means our hair responds differently based on formulation, application, and climate.
My tip: Always consider the leave-in conditioner underneath your styler. If the combination causes flakes, residue, or excessive stickiness, try the products separately before giving up on either one.
What Has Changed Since 2014?
Oh, ladies, haven't we learned a few things along the way?
Back then, it was easy to believe that finding one miracle product would solve every natural hair challenge.
Today, I'm much more interested in understanding my strands.
I've learned that the same product may perform differently on fine versus coarse hair, and that curl pattern alone doesn't tell the whole story.
Porosity, density, individual strand thickness, climate, styling technique, and the amount applied can all influence our results.
Most importantly, a product that works beautifully for someone else may not be the best match for your own crown. And that's perfectly fine!
