A New Year, a New Box of Natural Hair Goodies!
Greetings, my beautiful naturalistas!
Ladies, do you remember the excitement of receiving a package filled with hair-care products, especially when you didn't know exactly what treasures were waiting inside?
Well, that was part of the excitement surrounding CurlKit back in 2013!
As I continued exploring my natural hair journey, I became increasingly interested in discovering new products, comparing ingredients, and learning which formulations worked best for my 3C/4A curls.
The January 2013 CurlKit arrived with an assortment of shampoos, conditioners, styling products, beauty treats, and even a hair-care tool.
And ladies, there were nine featured items to explore!
Today, we're opening that box again—not literally, of course, but through the wonderful archives of Crowning Glory — Coils & Kinks.
Let's revisit what made this collection so interesting.
What Was Inside the January 2013 CurlKit?
1. As I Am Coconut CoWash
One of the most recognizable products in the January box was As I Am Coconut CoWash.
This cleansing conditioner was designed for those who enjoyed a gentler cleansing experience between regular shampoo sessions.
Co-washing became especially popular among naturalistas who wanted to maintain manageable curls while reducing the frequency of shampooing.
However, it is important to remember that co-washing isn't a complete replacement for shampoo for everyone.
Hair and scalp still need adequate cleansing to remove buildup, sweat, and excess oil.
For my fine curls, finding the right balance between cleansing and conditioning was especially important.
2. Annie Rubber Contour Brush
Ladies, we all know that finding a comfortable detangling or styling tool can make a world of difference!
The January kit featured an Annie Rubber Contour Brush.
Brushes and other styling tools can be helpful, but the best choice depends on the condition of your hair, your styling preferences, and the amount of tension applied.
When working with delicate natural curls, I prefer an approach that minimizes pulling and unnecessary breakage.
And remember, there's no need to force a brush through a stubborn tangle!
3. Pooka Pure and Simple Pomegranate Kiwi Sugar Body Polish
Now, ladies, who says a natural hair subscription box can't include a little pampering?
The Pooka Pomegranate Kiwi Sugar Body Polish added a personal-care treat to the collection.
Sugar-based body polishes are generally used to exfoliate the skin, helping remove loose surface skin cells.
This product was a reminder that caring for ourselves involves more than our hair.
Sometimes, a little time devoted to relaxation and self-care is just what we need.
4. Cream and Coco Raspberry Rice Pudding Shampoo Bar
This product certainly had an interesting name!
The Cream and Coco Raspberry Rice Pudding Shampoo Bar was another featured item.
Shampoo bars offer a solid alternative to traditional liquid shampoos, but their formulations can vary significantly.
Some are soap-based, while others contain different cleansing ingredients.
For natural hair, it is important to consider how a cleanser performs on your scalp and strands rather than assuming every shampoo bar works alike.
A good cleansing routine should leave your hair ready for conditioning, not excessively tangled or uncomfortable.
5. Coils by Nature Moisturizing Shealoe Leave-In Conditioner
A moisturizing leave-in conditioner is often a welcome addition to a natural hair routine.
The Coils by Nature Moisturizing Shealoe Leave-In Conditioner was another interesting product featured in the January box.
Leave-in conditioners can help improve manageability, softness, and slip, particularly when preparing hair for styling.
For fine 3C/4A textures, I have learned that applying the right amount is extremely important.
Too much of a rich product may leave delicate curls feeling weighed down.
But when you find a leave-in that complements your hair, ladies, it can become a wonderful part of your routine!
6. Ampro Pro Style Olive Oil Gel
The January CurlKit also featured Ampro Pro Style Olive Oil Gel.
Styling gels have long been popular for defining curls, controlling flyaways, and helping hairstyles maintain their shape.
The important thing is finding a product that delivers the hold you prefer without creating unnecessary stiffness or buildup.
Some naturalistas love a strong, defined hold, while others prefer soft, touchable curls.
And that's the beauty of our individual natural hair journeys.
We have choices!
7. Lustrasilk Moisture Max Keratin Amino Acid Leave-In Creme
Another product in the box was Lustrasilk Moisture Max Keratin Amino Acid Leave-In Creme.
Keratin and amino acids are commonly discussed in hair-care formulations because of their relationship to the structure of hair.
Depending on the formulation, products containing conditioning proteins or amino acids may temporarily improve the feel or manageability of the hair.
However, they cannot permanently repair damaged hair strands.
For naturalistas experiencing dryness, tangling, or breakage, the best approach is to consider the overall hair-care routine rather than relying on one ingredient as a miracle solution.
8. UR Curly Loose Curl Enhancer
The UR Curly Loose Curl Enhancer was included among the styling selections.
Curl-enhancing products generally aim to support the appearance of natural curl definition and reduce unwanted frizz.
However, the name of a product doesn't guarantee that it will change your natural curl pattern.
Our beautiful curls come in different shapes and sizes, and the goal should be to find products that help us style and appreciate the texture we already have.
Whether your curls are loose spirals, tight coils, or a mixture of several patterns, your crown is uniquely yours!
9. Keratin Maintenance Replenish Masque
The final featured item on my original January list was a Keratin Maintenance Replenish Masque.
Hair masks and deep conditioners have been popular parts of natural hair routines for many years.
A conditioning mask can help make strands feel softer, smoother, and easier to detangle, depending on its ingredients and how it's used.
The key is choosing a treatment that addresses your hair's actual needs.
And ladies, more product—or a longer treatment time—does not automatically mean better results.
Always follow the directions for the product you're using.
What Made the January 2013 Box Interesting?
Looking back, I appreciate the variety of products included in this collection.
There were cleansing products, conditioners, styling aids, a brush, and even a body-care treat.
For someone learning about natural hair products in 2013, receiving an assortment like this offered an opportunity to become familiar with different categories and brands.
Some of these names may still be familiar to today's natural hair community, while others may have changed their products, formulas, packaging, or availability over the years.

The Lessons I Learned From Trying New Products
Ladies, one lesson that became increasingly important throughout my natural hair journey was learning not to confuse having more products with having a better hair-care routine.
We can spend a considerable amount of money searching for that perfect conditioner, moisturizer, or styling cream.
And sometimes, the product we already have is doing a perfectly good job!
I discovered that knowing my hair's needs was much more valuable than trying every new item that appeared on the market.
For my fine 3C/4A curls, that meant paying attention to product quantity, conditioning, gentle detangling, and keeping my routine manageable.
The natural hair journey is filled with opportunities to experiment, but it is also an opportunity to learn simplicity.
A Little Nostalgia From the Natural Hair Community
One of the things I treasure most about revisiting these early articles is remembering how much excitement surrounded the natural hair movement.
Women were exchanging product information, discussing styling methods, sharing photographs, and encouraging one another to embrace their curls and coils.
