This blog is the result of a question from a fellow natural hair lady, Lady Rice!  She wanted to "refresh" her hair in the morning without "rewetting" her wash n' go.  As most of us natural ladies know that sleeping with your hair attire, unless you pineapple, you end up with "helmet" hair!  Curls are still there but they are "smashed" or "matted."  Not a pretty site!

Okay, the steaming trend erupted in the Fall of 2013.  There was one steamer, in particular that took the Vlogger's by storm!  It was the Huetiful Hair and Facial Steamer!  Vloggers couldn't get enough of recording the benefits and results of steaming their tresses.

I've included a few steamers that you might be interested in looking at or purchasing.  However, let's take a look at the purpose/benefits of steaming your tresses natural, relaxed, or processed?

Why become a Steamer?!

Natural hair has a tendency to be DRY!  Every natural strives to keep their tresses as moisturized as possible with the ease of maintaining that moisture!  Moisture is a natural's best friend and that source is WATER!

  • Steaming allows you to add moisture to your tresses
  • Adding moisture to your hair promotes length and growth
  • Steaming gently lifts the cuticle, allowing for better absorption of product
  • Moisturized Hair Resists Breakage More Easily
  • Promotes a Healthier Scalp
  • Streaming "Refreshes" Your Hairstyle Without Having to Re-Wetting Hair
  • Prevents Hygral Fatigue (the expanding and contracting of hair when going from being "soaking wet" to "dry"
  • Moisture is a friend to curl definition!  Promotes Clumping of Your Curls
  • No Need to Go Out the Door with Wet Hair!

Now ladies let's take a look at our options:

The Q-Redew

http://www.qredew.com/products/Q-Redew.html
Price:  $69.95

What Q-Redew says that it can do?

Reshape/Refresh style with Q-Redew

Steam hair with Q-Redew to refresh a style, restyle, or rejuvenate second day hair without the shrinkage caused by saturating the hair.

To reshape and rejuvenate hair

  • Start with dry hair.
  • Add steam from roots to ends.
  • Use opposite hand or the end of a rats tail comb to position, scrunch, or manipulate hair while steaming.
  • If you are prone to frizz limit touching the hair while warm.
  • Use the Q-Redew prongs to lift and separate hair to distribute steam.
  • Let cool and continue with styling.
REVIEW:

This is a testamonial from the Q-Redew site: (Submitted By:  Jouelzy)

"I LOVE the Q-Redew steamer because it’s so simple that I have absolutely no excuse not to use it. I fill it up and I can steam my hair with out much setup or mess while watching TV, laying in the bed. It’s great. I steam to deep condition my hair. I steam to reset my hair. I steam to re-moisturize my hair. I steam just about any time I need my hair to be damp and that saves me on having to wash my hair just to do a new style. I steam my face, trying to get that glowing skin. I steam my hair in braids when I’m wearing a wig. I steam a lot.
I would recommend steaming once a week on your wash day. From there you can do it as often as you like. The baggy and GHE method are both built around steaming your hair through self generated body heat. That can take all day – several days. You can achieve similar results so following the same rules for baggy or GHE method and just using a steamer for 20-40 minutes to get the job done. Deep moisture penetration is great for everyone."
Huetiful Hair and Facial Steamer

http://www.behuetiful.com/collections/steamers/products/huetiful-hair-facial-steamer
Price:  $116.95

Product Description:

Restores moisture to your dry hair up to 5x better than the leading deep conditioner
Retains length and strengthens hair by replenishing moisture lost to relaxers or heat straightening.

Significantly reduces breakage and split ends
Includes a complimentary Spa Facial Steamer
Steaming naturally infuses hydration deep into each hair strand to strengthen, prevent breakage, and retain length.

 How it works:

Typically, conditioners set on top of your hair strands and are washed away before penetrating deep into each hair strand.
However, steam lifts the hair cuticle layers (shingle like protective layers) to allow for the conditioner to deeply penetrate.
While the cuticle layers are lifted, the steam provides need hydration along with the conditioner in each hair strand.

REVIEW
This review was made by:  Naturally Nicky
"You can use whatever deep conditioner you like on freshly clean hair and then sit up under the steamer for about 20 minutes. Most ladies either are texting or reading a magazine while under the steamer. You will need a towel because the mist will cause droplets of water to run down your face. The steamer will let you know when you are finished. It is as simple as 123. My hair is so much easier to manage and since using this steamer my hair has a nice shine to it! My friends are always telling me how soft my hair is and I attribute it to the Huetiful.

The Huetiful is worth every penny of my money spent. Since using this steamer during my one year natural hair journey, I have had no moisture issues. I am now going into my three year natural hair journey and still no issues. This is a great investment for happy hair!!!"

REVIEW
A blogger  has made the following observation/review of this product:
"This was definitely a treat indeed when I received it in the mail. Assembly only took 5 minutes and another 3 minutes for the water to heat up for the steam. My hair did feel moisturized after use, not necessarily more than normal, but with continued use I did see changes. There are a couple of things I did not like though. One, the nape of my hair is not affected by the steam at all (hair was pulled up in bun). The steam was directed mostly toward the front. Also the steam only last 15 minutes, which is not completely a bad thing but the time goes by so fast. Ironically, this unit is nearly identical to the Huetiful Hair Steamer. Come to find out, these products are the exact same thing. Trademark rights come from China so with the Huetiful Steamer, you're basically paying for the "brand name". I purchased my steamer for $71.99 with a discount code: 10MOREBF from Amazon. So go ahead and check it out. This is a great alternative if you are looking to save a few bucks on a hair steamer."
Gold N' Hot Professional Conditioning Heat Cap
 Price:  $31.99 to $49.50
Product Description:
Conditioning Heat Cap:
* Gentle heat helps activate conditioners
* Assists in restoring damaged hair
* Leaves hair soft and manageable after conditioning treatments
* Designed for all hair types
* 3 heat settings for conditioning versatility
* Thermostatically controlled
* Adjustable chin strap
This option is very popular.  However, it does not produce as much steam but leaves your hair soft, moisturized, and detangled.  The added attraction to this model is that it is portable and easily and readily stored.

 My Opinion!
I will not be jumping on the bandwagon to purchase a steamer!  Why, you ask?  It's been a good two years since the initial trend, by naturals to steam.  My reasoning for the price of steamers to still be highly priced.  My second reason is because I've been facilitating my need for moisture the old fashioned way!  LOL!

My Routine:

I am primarily a wash n' go natural.  My hair is 3c/4a and is coily, coily, and curly.  Styling twists are a waste of time because my hair reverts back to its natural state as the day wears on.

I moisturize my hair with a leave-in and water, loosely twist hair or band with a loose elastic tie.  Cover hair with a plastic cap and off to sleep I go.  This allows me the benefit of steaming my hair throughout the night without having soaking wet hair in the morning!  When I wake up, I take off the plastic cap, shake, and allow hair to dry before leaving the house.

If hair my scalp feels too wet, I'll sit under my hooded dryer for 10 - 15 minutes and I'm out the door!  A fresh wash n' go every morning!

If you want the benefits of steaming and can tolerate spending a little more time and a lot less money, I have the following alternatives for you!
  • Mist your hair and cover your tresses with a plastic cap and sit under a dryer for 15 - 20 minutes!
  • Microwave a soaking wet Tee Shirt or Towel for approximately 2 minutes.  Then wrap your hair with it and cover with a plastic bag.
  • My favorite - Go Sauna!  After a good workout at the gym, condition your tresses, cover with a plastic cap and towel and enjoy the benefit of generated steam!
There you have it my naturalista friends!  Ready, set, full steam ahead!  Use your favorite method or Steamer to steer your way into a world of softer, luxurious, and moisturized curls!
Leave me your comments, favorite steaming method, question, and/or review below!
Until next time,
Happy Curls to You!

Dr. Miracle's Curl Care Weightless Moisturizing Cream 8 oz

Description

works wonders on hair and scalp problems. "Feel It" Formula's tingling sensation supports strong growing hair and healthy scalp. Thermalceutical complex penetrates scalp, healing dryness, flaking and itching. Moisturizes, conditions and shines. Strengthens hair and scalp. This oil is truly a miracle......

Features:

Works wonders on hair and scalp problems
Heals dryness, flaking and itching
Moisturizes, conditions and shines
Strengthens hair and scalp
Contains lavender, avocado, castor, sesame, jojoba, and wheat germ

First things first, ingredients:

INGREDIENTS: Water (Aqua EU), Glycerine, Paraffinium Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Triethanolamine, Carbomer, Honey, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Oleth-5, Menthol, Menthone Glycerin Acetal, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Zea Mays(Corn) Oil, Cholecalciferol, DMDM Hydantoin, Diazodilinyl Urea, Iodopropynl Butylcarbamate, Parfum (Fragrance), Benzyl Benzoate, Citral, Citronellol, d-Limonine, Geraniol, Hexyl Cinnamic Aldehyde, Linalool
I was amazingly surprised that I'd like this product.  It does, however, have a strong smell but if you like a minty, cool breeze on your scalp -- you will easily forget the smell.  The smell isn't bad but has a mediciney fragrance to it.

Product went on smoothly and was creamy.  I would not rate it high in "defining" curls but it most certainly helps your tresses to retain moisture.  This product will give you a "soft" hold, which I prefer.  It is a perfect candidate for those naturals who are using the LOC method (leave-in, Oils, and Creme).  It would fall in the category of the "C" for creme.  Some users have stated that the product helps them to keep the "frizzies" away, which is one of my concerns and it did help with that since it happens to be a "heavy" creme!  So, if you are looking for your hair to be bouncy and light, this is not the product for you!  However, if you live in a more humid climate, this may be a product worth trying.

It does not state to be applied to wet hair.  Therefore, it can be placed in the category of second, third-day hair use or as a refresher.  This is a plus for those, unlike me, who don't want to "wet" their hair everyday!

Again, this is one of those products that most people will either "love it!" or "hate it!"  It's price point is good.  It can be found at some beauty supply stores between $6.99 to $8.99 and is one item in a full hair care line.

As always, please leave a comment, suggestion, or thought below.

Until next time!

Happy Curls to You!

Hat Dressing

http://www.heavenlybodyboutique.com/

Dressing for Church Service

  • It is imperative for many African-American women to look their grandest when going before God. Today, it is most often the older women who dress elaborately on Sunday mornings.
For many of these women and their ancestors, dressing up for church was one of the few opportunities they had to remove domestic aprons and house dresses. These drab garments were replaced by bright colors, fancy shoes and elaborate hats that would stand out in a crowd. Style and sophistication would rule the day.

From Slavery to the 21st Century

  • Ready for steppin' out.

The hat tradition began with the writings of the Apostle Paul, who said women must cover their heads when they come to worship (1 Corinthians, chapter 11). During the time of slavery, black women dressed for church rather simply, sprucing up their worn hats for Sunday service.
Now that African-American women have come so far through years of struggles, pain and suffering, part of the hat tradition celebrates their confidence and independence. As black women began earning good livings, they treated themselves to new hats, gloves and purses to match. The hat became a status symbol, showing triumph over the hardships.

Not Just Any Hat

  • Hat shopping is serious business. Just any old hat won't do. Women will scour boutiques for one that's special and unique. It will be big, elaborate, chic and a bit on the flashy side.
The church ladies strive for a stunning appearance, with colors and fabric that match from top to bottom, including accessories. The hat will tie the entire outfit together and give it the "wow" factor their looking for. Regardless of how they appear during the weekdays, on Sundays African-American women want to look like a queen.

Hats and the Elder Women

  • Black Women in Church Hats 1974

With today's hairstyles such as braids, twists and dreads, the big elaborate hats are taking a back seat -- especially with the younger generations of black women. The new hairstyles are too big and bulky to accommodate the hat. The culture and tradition remains, however, for elder black females. Many of them wouldn't be caught at any special occasion without their fabulous hat. Going without would be like walking around naked, and that would be just unacceptable.

Using Baking Soda to Loosen Natural Curls

How to Loosen Natural Curls With Baking Soda

How to Loosen Natural Curls With Baking Soda thumbnail
Skip the store bought straighteners that damage hair.
Naturally curly hair is a blessing and a curse, depending upon who you ask. For many, their naturally curly hair is a constant challenge involving chemical straighteners, trips to the salon and money needlessly spent on treatments that damage the hair and scalp. The use of baking soda is a more natural, safe way to loosen curls for women with any hair texture or length. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Mild shampoo
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • Conditioner
  • 2 tbsp. honey
  • 2 tbsp. avocado oil
  • Plastic cling wrap

Instructions

    • 1
Wash your hair with mild shampoo only. Do not use conditioner. Rinse the shampoo away and allow your hair to dry, until it is slightly damp, not soaking wet.
    • 2
Prepare a mixture of 1/4 cup baking soda, 1 cup conditioner and 2 tbsp. honey.
    • 3
Prepare a mixture of 1 cup normal conditioner and 2 tbsp. avocado oil. Set this mixture in a small bowl next to your bathtub or bathroom sink.
    • 4
Work the baking soda and conditioner mixture through your hair, beginning at the scalp and moving down the shafts of the hair until you reach the ends.
    • 5
Cover your hair with a layer of plastic cling wrap and allow the baking soda mixture to remain for five to six hours.
    • 6
Rinse the baking soda mixture from your hair. Do not attempt to detangle or brush out your hair.
    • 7
Cover your hair with a healthy dose of the conditioner and avocado oil mixture.
    • 8
Allow the mixture to remain for 15 minutes before rinsing it out. The mixture will help renew some of the moisture that was lost during the baking soda treatment.
    • 9
Style your loosened curls as desired.
