I faithfully moisturize my hair on a daily basis.  However, lately I noticed that the ends of my hair seemed to be a little see through.  So, I decided that I needed to alter or rearrange my hair regimen.

I have been a faithful "wash n' go" wearer and recently noticed that I had retained length but the ends of my hair seemed to be thinning.

I found a great article by Natural Haven that helps us to understand why this happens:

Food for Thought:

Trimming could allow your hair to attain a longer length. It sounds strange but what my fellow lab rats discovered is that hair will grow until it reaches a critical length when it appears to grow slowly or not at all (Journal of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, pg 155-75, 1978.).

To understand why this happens, I will start by explaining why hair starts to taper (meaning the strand becomes thinner as it gets farther away from the scalp). Simply put, the cuticle wears away. Remember that the cuticle is not just one layer, it has several layers to it.

As the hair grows from scalp to tip, the damage to the cuticle increases because the hair at the tip is older and has been subjected to more torture (combing, wetting, drying, roller setting, heat setting, etc).

Cutting the tip of the hair off may be an excellent way to possibly trigger a new longer length.

So, I have decided that for the next 30 days I will continue my usual wash, co-wash, moisturizing, and styler regimen but I will now choose to style my tresses in a "protective style."  Mainly, twists worn in an updo or pinned up style!  I took the time to clip "all" frazzled, ratty, or severely uneven ends throughout my hair.

In our next blog we will examine the causes of not only thinning ends but thinning hair!

Was I Staring?

Have you been witness to stopping in your tracks when you saw a sista walk by with some bodacious hair?  I have found myself guilty of that very thing!  It truly wasn't my intentions but since this natural hair revolution has been on trend, the textures, colors, and styles of natural hair has been in the forefront of style!

There is this one young lady that steps onto the train with various shades of blonde-colored tresses.  Her fro is big and puffy and her stride is just as large!  It makes me want to take a double look!  Amongst of train full of flowing tresses, her hair refuses to take a back seat!  It seems to take great delight in the fact that it refuses to lay down!  Her curls politely waves as the air flows through it.  It is obvious that I'm not the only person that sneaks to take another look.  The onlookers are privy to another option of style that refuses to play coy games but takes great delight in knowing that you "it made you look!"

The color option deepens as you eye wanders to her neckline.  The deep ombre of honey blonde tresses elegantly anchors her beautiful kinks, coils, and curls.  It's like taking in a breath of fresh air.

We are slowly embracing the idea that there is no such thing as "good hair" but that of textures and curls that define each crown.  After all, because a woman's crown is her glory, each crown is unique to each woman!

Most women report that she has SEVERAL type of curls and coils!  This making her head of hair different even from her natural siblings crown of hair.

This makes the desire to "touch" someone else's curls such a phenomenon! Out of curiousity, intrique, and wonder observers almost inately find themselves doing something that they otherwise would never entertain.  Wanting to touch those unique strands of natural hair!

Smiling natural hair wearers can be found across the internet sporting their natural tresses in style!  Lighten, brighten, or dark and lovely, each unique crown of hair is sure to inspire or say "I made you look!"

So, if you find yourself taking a second look, or even staring at the coif of a natural hair wearer as she waltzes by -- it's a natural thing to do!  It's a compliment to the wearer and it's recognition that we've come a long way baby!

As usual, leave your comment or even a pic of you Hair of the Day!  Look so forward to hearing from you!

Is that a New Hair Style?

In a matter of 15 minutes I had two women ask me "Is that a New Hair Style?!  Of course, I had to remember what I had done to my hair!  LOL!

The first woman had been sitting across from me on the train when I noticed that she just kept staring.  I kept looking away because I didn't know what she was really looking at when you finally asked the question.  She said she had "never seen my hair looking like that before!"  So, I went on to explain to her what I had done and she responded that she "wished her hair would do that!"  She went on to tell me how "nappy" and unruly her natural hair was.

I tried to convey to her that ALL hair types need to be worked with and explored.

The second woman walked behind me to the street light and then asked the same question.  She was wearing Havanna Twists and they were beautiful!  Again, the reply was how she wished or desired to have a different "TYPE" of hair!  She is a natural and have been for a while and so inspired her daughter to become natural too!

I had decided to change my regimen again which started on October 15, 2013.  I went back to the Tightly Curly method.

My Renewed Regimen

  • Co-Wash -- Tresemme Naturals
  • Re-Applied Tresemme Naturals as My Leave-In
  • Sprayed My Hair with Alikay's Lemongrass Leave-In Conditioner (Love This Stuff!)
  • Applied Alikay's Emu Oil
  • Sealed with Alikay's Shea Moisturing Creme
I then parted my hair into sections, starting from the lower back of my heard -- in a shingling type method -- and twirled my hair around my fingers.  The Tightly Curly Method calls this "doodling."  My hair ends of "coiling" up and I continue until I've finished my whole head.

I cowash on Sunday night.  Proceed to "doodle" - this takes me about 45 mintues to an Hour.  I will refresh on the third day (Wednesday) and I'm good til Sunday.  I will spritz hair at night with Alikay's Lemongrass Leave-In nightly and cover my hair on sleep with a satin scarf over my pillow.

Hair will not "poof" up as much if you do not put too much water on your hair at night but give yourself enough time before going to bed to allow hair to "completely" dry.  I try not to spritz in the morning, I can usually just shake and go!

Embracing what grows out of our head is as unique as we are as individuals!  My hair is curly but it's fine and thinner than I desire.  I  love to see those photos of 4b and c's with their thick and natural twists!

We, whatever texture, type, fine, coarse, short, or long, must learn to wear our Crowning Glory with great honor!

Happy Curls to You!
